More About Patrick

Patrick is a first generation Vietnamese-Australian Clinical Psychologist. He was born and raised in South West Sydney.  Having grown up with immigrant Vietnamese parents in an Australian culture, he kept a foot in both cultures and understands the difficulty of staying true to your cultural heritage whilst also respecting the customs and culture of Australia.

From a young age, Patrick has always held a passion in helping people by trying to understanding them and their behaviours. He channelled this passion by pursing a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours). On completion of his undergraduate degree, he recognised a significant gap in mental health care within his community, leading him to complete his Master of Clinical Psychology.

During his studies, Patrick had the opportunity to work as a research officer on various research projects at the University of Western Sydney as well as teach undergraduate level and honours level psychology subjects. Teaching psychology sparked his passion in teaching and training the next generation of psychology students and psychologists.

Patrick completed his clinical placements at the Western Sydney University Psychology Clinics, The University of Sydney's Gambling Treatment Clinic, South Coast Private Mental Health Hospital, and the Child Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) in Penrith.

Following his Master of Clinical Psychology, he worked both in the public sector on the Adult Community Mental Health Team and in private practice. In the public sector, he worked with complex mental health presentations in conjunction with other support providers and learnt how to navigate the public health system to best support his patients. In private practice, Patrick familiarised himself with the Medicare and private health system while also practicing his assessment and therapy skills with a wide range of presentations and patients.

Patrick later joined the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) team in the South East Sydney Local Health District. At CAMHS, he worked along side a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrist, paediatrician, nurses, occupational therapists, and social workers. During his time with CAMHS, he worked with children, young people and their family systems to support them in addressing complex mental health presentations. He also supervised provisional psychologists (trainee psychologists) undertaking their Master of Clinical Psychology program, and psychologists undertaking their clinical registrar program.

Currently Patrick also works on the OCD BOUNCE Clinic at Sydney Children's Hospital (Randwick) where he provides specialised consultation on paediatric OCD presentations for mental health teams across the NSW Health network, engages in research projects for innovations in OCD assessment and treatment, provides supervision for provisional psychologists.  As part of his work on the OCD BOUNCE team, he works collaboratively with the University of New South Wales  (UNSW) and Griffith University. He is currently a Conjoint Lecturer at UNSW's School of Medicine and Health.

Patrick now shares his time between working in his own private practice at Thought Bubble Psychology in Horsley Park on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and in the public sector on the OCD BOUNCE team at Sydney Children's Hospital (Randwick).

When not working, Patrick winds down by spending his time outdoors camping, swimming, rock climbing or playing golf. When he can't get outside, he's usually found reading or trying to perfect his smoked barbeque recipes.
